Under the direct supervision of the Chief of GIS, duties of the GIS Specialist will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in timely preparation, maintenance and provision of geographic information and maps in support of the mission’s operations;

  • Collect, process and evaluate geographic data, including vector, raster and thematic data;

  • Compile large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps;

  • Archive mission geographic data and maintain and update geo-database system;

  • Assist in providing geographic information training and education programmes for mission staff;

  • Participate in field recognizance survey, road assessment using the Global Position System (GPS), the mobile data collection solutions and preparation of reports;

  • Conduct aerial missions using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or Drones) to collect aerial photography of the areas of Interest for MONUSCO’s operations.

  • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training;

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Under the direct supervision of Chief Rations Unit through the Rations Operations Officer the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Monitor contractors’ performance;

  • Examine, verify and review the contract terms in respect of food rations items supplied by the contractors to ensure that they respects terms and conditions;

  • Perform quality control and quality assurance for all work and/or services provided by the contractor;

  • Monitor shipments of incoming containers and inspect the rations on arrival, including accompanying documentation as required, i.e., health and safety certifications to conform to UN Standard.

  • Conduct regular inspections/site visits at contractor's facility (warehouse & vehicles) to check cleanliness, validation and warranty of fresh, frozen and dry items and subsequent submission of reports to Chief Rations Unit;

  • Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with directives/instructions given during previous inspections;

  • Conduct scheduled and unannounced inspections at all unit/contingent's rations stores, reefers, kitchens and dining halls to ensure compliance with ration management guidelines and procedures, hygienic and safety standards of both food handlers and equipment;

  • Conduct periodic inspections at sub-contracted local bakeries and suppliers to ascertain compliance with hygienic and quality standards of products provided to military units/contingents;

  • Assist food officers (contingents) in resolving ration quality complaints;

  • Participate in regular training programs, i.e., Electronic Rations Management System Training, food seminars and food conferences for contingent's food officers organized by rations unit or locally by Sector Rations Unit.

  • Provide suggestions and solutions on quality problems revealed and provide input to the reports;

  • Monitor the cold chain used by the contractor so that food is stored in acceptable conditions of storing;

  • Monitor and advice accordingly on pest control in the contractor’s facility;

  • Perform other related functions as assigned by the Chief of Unit.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of HSG/TL or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Technical Officer Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation will:

  • To contribute to the development of the AFRO M&E Guide in collaboration with other ULC teams and health programmes;
  • To support in the formulation of national monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plans in collaboration with members of HIS team.
  • To undertake the monitoring the implementation health partners’ grants for national health systems strengthening within the context of UNC 2030 Partnership.
  • To contribute to the coordination of monitoring the implementation and reporting of health systems related grants within the context of GHIs support (GAVI, GF, UHC 2030-P) for PHC oriented health systems strengthening towards UHC
  • To collaborate with ULC/HSG staff at the Regional Office, IST, Country Offices, and contribute to the organization of the annual technical meetings of Directors of Policy and Planning in the African region
  • To contribute in supporting countries undertake health sector assessments & analyses such as Joint Annual Reviews (JARs), and mid-term and end of plan reviews (MTRs etc) and Joint Assessments (JANS),
  • Document good practices and lessons learned aimed at achieving results as part of the implementation national health/programme plans towards PHC oriented HSS for UHC;
  • To perform other related responsibilities as assigned, including replacing and backstopping for others as required.
