FROM GRAINS TO FRUITS:
BETTER HARVESTS AHEAD
12
In 1975, farmers at a research farm in Hudaydah, supported by
FAO and guided by a UN Volunteer, cultivated maize as part of
efforts to boost Yemen’s largely subsistence agriculture, with
grains, fruits, vegetables and cotton being the main crops. With
UN agency support, the government launched development
programmes to improve livelihoods and increase crop yields.
