On 24 May, UNDP and UNV joined the largest cleaning campaign in Kosovo to date. As part of the global initiative ‘Let’s Do It! World Clean-up’, over 130,000 volunteers participated with the aim to clean the environment in Kosovo. UNV supported the ‘Let’s do it Kosovo’ campaign by providing technical assistance and training ‘Let’s do it Kosovo’ staff in volunteer mobilization and coordination.
On 24 May, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme joined the largest cleaning campaign in Kosovo to date. As part of the global initiative ‘Let’s Do It! World Clean-up’, over 130,000 volunteers participated with the aim to clean the environment in Kosovo. During this whole-day event, around 1,700 tons of household waste and 9,700 tons of solid waste were collected by a wide range of volunteers, including representatives of all central Kosovo institutions, municipal institutions and heads of municipalities, youth organizations, local and international non-governmental organizations, the embassy staff in Pristina, United Nations personnel, and other international staff working in Kosovo. UNV supported the ‘Let’s do it Kosovo’ campaign by providing technical assistance and training ‘Let’s do it Kosovo’ staff in volunteer mobilization and coordination, and preparing guidelines for the management of volunteers. These efforts increased the participation of volunteers and improved their coordination. In relation to last year’s campaign, the number of volunteers who participated in the clean-up campaign almost tripled. Let’s Do It! is a global civic movement with the mission to connect and empower people and organizations around the world to make this planet cleaner and healthier. Launched in 2008, the campaign is one of the fastest-expanding civic movements. On its inaugural year, 50,000 people came together and got rid of 10,000 tons of illegal garbage from forests, riversides and towns. In 2010, 96 countries had joined the campaign.
