Maksuda Muhsinbaeva is serving as a UNV Community Volunteer Coordinator in Namangan, the most populous city of the Fergana Valley in Eastern Uzbekistan. She has a background in psychology, a decade-long record in community development with both local and international organizations, and is now one of several national UN Volunteers working in Uzbekistan.

This summer UN Volunteers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) organized volunteering initiatives aimed at improving people’s lives. After a call for projects by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in DRC, several initiatives were put forward, each very different from the other, but all with one common objective: to improve the quality of life in the communities.

In July, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme called on all UN Volunteers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to propose small-scale initiatives for the benefit of the local communities. Seven projects were put forward by UN Volunteers, all with the common goal to improve the quality of life of the local communities.

Two young volunteers from Togo provide services to their community in the Kara region, in order to support and strengthen the delivery of basic services. They are national volunteers under the National Volunteer Programme in Togo (PRONOVAT) implemented with the support and technical expertise of UN Volunteers.

In taking the oath, in accordance with the new Togolese volunteer law, these young people are committed to fulfill their duties with dedication and professionalism, and to promote actions that will impact economic and social development of the country.

Trincomalee, Sri Lanka: When I was in high school in Kenya, I participated in various volunteer programmes for palliative care centres and hospitals as part of my studies (I needed to complete 500 hours). This instilled in me a set of values that compelled me to act on deeply held beliefs about the importance of helping others.

At the beginning it did not feel voluntary as it felt like an obligation. However, with time I owned the values and felt the need and urge to volunteer to better my community. Values I hold to date.
