Multilingualism allows communication between the different Member States of the United Nations (UN) with different languages and cultures. In promoting tolerance, multilingualism ensures greater participation of all Member States in the work they perform within the Organization, as well as greater effectiveness, better results and greater participation.


To promote the use of the six official languages and to guarantee the full and equitable treatment of all official languages, there are minimum standards for multilingualism of UN websites.

On 15 July, UNV will be launching its new Online Volunteering service from Brazil and in collaboration with the United Nations country team and the Samsung Latin American Office.
Brazil has been selected as the location for the global launch as the country ranks #4 worldwide for the number of UN Online Volunteers and has a high potential for growth in online volunteering activities in general.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme announced this week the five winners of the "UNV Online Volunteering Award 2015" and launched a global voting campaign for the public's favourite winner. 

Through the UNV Online Volunteering service, UNV mobilizes every year more than 11,000 UN Online Volunteers who undertake more than 17,000 online volunteering assignments. 60 percent of UN Online Volunteers come from the global South.

After announcing the ten winners of the Online Volunteering Award 2013, UNV invited citizens worldwide to vote for their favourite team. The online volunteers that helped the Association of African Entrepreneurs (AAE) carry out research on the entrepreneurial environment in African countries and produced an e-book and articles got the most votes. The final product, titled “Hopes and Mirages”, is intended to serve as a guide for anyone who wishes to embark on a business enterprise in the region.

UNV highlights the work of two online volunteers and their important contributions to communities far away from their own: One woman in Malaysia assists with the design and production of a brochure for an agricultural association (ADICTA) in one of the poorest regions of Guatemala. Another online volunteer, located in Oxford, England, has been offering free post-secondary education courses and tutoring to Ugandan, Afghani and Nepalese refugees and IDPs (internally displaced persons) through Respect University.
