Olé, Olé, Olé—FIFA joins UN in support of IVY 2026

Volunteers “represent the welcoming vibe and the living, local legacy of our competitions,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino as Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) joins the United Nations in support of International Volunteer Year 2026.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2026 the International Volunteer Year—setting the stage for a global celebration of volunteers.

FIFA is stepping in as a key partner, bringing its own vast volunteer network to the spotlight. With more than 2.5 million members worldwide, the organization is preparing to deploy around 50,000 volunteers for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, the largest and most inclusive tournament in football history.

FIFA has already partnered with the UN on several impactful programmes, and we are so proud to have joined forces again and pledged our support to the International Volunteer Year initiative,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “Where would we be without the selflessness and dedication of the world’s one billion volunteers? Their efforts strengthen communities and change lives. They have earned our recognition and support.”

Spanning Canada, Mexico and the United States, the event will unite fans across continents—and volunteers will be at its core. Often the first point of contact for fans and media, they will support teams, manage logistics and help deliver a seamless tournament experience both on and off the pitch.

Interest in volunteering has surged, with more than one million people applying for roles at the tournament. FIFA says its volunteer programme not only powers its events but also builds skills, connections and lasting impact—reinforcing the UN’s call to recognize, celebrate and expand volunteerism worldwide.

This year, the FIFA Volunteer Community surpassed 2.5 million members. The FIFA Volunteer Programme has played a vital role in supporting events that enhance their communities and inspire people around the world, all while developing skills, relationships and memories that last a lifetime.
