From Uzbekistan to the world: Uzbek volunteers set to serve globally

Bonn, 4 November 2025—United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and Uzbekistan’s Youth Affairs Agency have signed an agreement that officially launches a new initiative to support young Uzbek citizens volunteering abroad. This marks an important step forward, making it possible for Uzbek nationals to serve in the United Nations system as fully funded UN Volunteers.

The signing ceremony, held at UNV headquarters in Bonn, was attended by the First Deputy Director of the Youth Affairs Agency and the Director of Management Services of UNV. This reaffirms Uzbekistan’s commitment to promoting youth engagement and international volunteerism. The Uzbek delegation was represented by the Youth Affairs Agency and the Association of Volunteers of Uzbekistan.

“We are pleased to advance the implementation of the Full Funding agreement, as it will open new opportunities for Uzbek youth to gain international experience within the UN. Through this partnership, we also aim to raise awareness among Uzbek nationals about broader UNV opportunities and the values of volunteerism.” Dilnozakhon Kattakhanova, First Deputy Director of the Youth Affairs Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

UNV welcomes the leadership of the Youth Affairs Agency and encourages further cooperation, including a potential contribution to UNV’s Special Voluntary Fund and the expansion of fully funded assignments in the coming years.

“This partnership with Uzbekistan is a powerful testament to the country’s commitment to global solidarity and empowerment. By enabling Uzbek nationals to serve as UN Volunteers, we are not only expanding opportunities for young people to contribute to peace and development but also strengthening the UN system with fresh perspectives and energy.” Andrey Pogrebnyak, Director of Management Services, UNV.

In 2024, 52 Uzbek citizens served as UN Volunteers, 69 percent of whom were women, with an average age of 26. The majority were deployed nationally, with top host entities including UNDP, UNFPA and UN Women. The UNV talent pool currently includes 816 Uzbek candidates, showcasing a vibrant and capable youth population ready to contribute globally.

This partnership shows a strong commitment to giving young people real opportunities to make a difference around the world through volunteering with the United Nations.
