Xinzhuang is in Changping District of Beijing. Located at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains, this area has about 2,000 residents, 60% of whom are non-locals. The “newcomers” settle here to take their children to a local school. The rest of the population are mostly farmers, as the village is one of the main suppliers of strawberries to Beijing.  Xinzhuang village is a typical rural community with basic public services for waste and sanitation. But things changed after an incident in the village.

In 2016, 30 national UN Volunteers served in China to support the SDGs and inclusive development. 19 Chinese nationals served as UN Volunteers overseas to promote peace and development. 293 Chinese nationals volunteered online through UNV’s Online Volunteering service.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals

The two-day conference is co-hosted by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and the Beijing Volunteer Service Federation (BVF), and aims to continue building a strong Southern constituency and voice in international volunteering and co-create new ideas on how volunteering can be effectively mainstreamed to support national development priorities by low- and middle-income countries. It also aims to identify new opportunities for innovative partnerships to jointly overcome development challenges through international volunteering.

Un milliard de personnes à travers le monde sont engagées dans le volontariat – ce qui constitue un puissant vecteur intersectoriel de mise en œuvre des objectifs de développement durable. Cependant, il subsiste le besoin de recueillir des preuves tangibles de la valeur du volontariat dans le développement durable. On observe en Chine une croissance marquée et un esprit d’innovation en matière d’infrastructure de volontariat, et encore aujourd'hui, il est impératif d’évaluer et de partager les approches novatrices chinoises de volontariat favorables au développement durable.

Mil millones de personas están involucradas en programas de voluntariado, y esto representa un medio poderoso y transversal de implementar los Objetivos del Desarrollo Sostenible. No obstante, todavía existe una gran demanda de evidencia empírica sobre el valor que aporta el voluntariado al desarrollo sostenible. China ha experimentado un sólido e innovador crecimiento en su infraestructura de voluntariado y es necesario que evaluemos y compartamos estos innovadores enfoques chinos hacia el voluntariado y su contribución al desarrollo sostenible.

Globally one billion people are engaged in volunteering – representing a powerful, cross-cutting means of implementation for the Sustainable Development Goals. However, there remains a huge demand for empirical evidence on the value of volunteering for sustainable development. China has experienced strong growth and innovation in its volunteering infrastructure, and today there is a pressing need to evaluate and share innovative Chinese approaches to volunteering for sustainable development.

During a side event held today at the 2016 UNV Partnership Forum, Mr. Richard Dictus, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and Mr. Ying Wang, Deputy Secretary General of Beijing Volunteer Service Federation (BVF), announced the new cooperation project “Strengthening China’s Involvement in the Development of International Volunteer Service through South-South Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative.”

SDG 1: No poverty

The UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi recently spent a week visiting China at the invitation of the All-China Youth Federation.  He was joined by a joint UN delegation of senior youth experts from UNESCO, UNV, UNEP, UN Habitat, ILO, and UNFPA to advance collaboration on youth development in China.
