This year's theme, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, highlights the success of global efforts through the meaningful participation of young people.

Alexandra seized the opportunity to serve as a national UN Volunteer Youth Engagement Officer with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Serbia. The assignment sparked her will to contribute to UNICEF’s mission, especially as a young person herself. Now, as she finishes her assignment, Aleksandra describes her experience as crosscutting and most enriching.

In Malawi, the Spotlight Initiative (SI) was rolled out in 2019 and is being implemented jointly by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and UN Women in six districts: Nkhata Bay, Mzimba, Dowa, Ntchisi, Machinga and Nsanje.

In Uganda, thousands of children become extremely sick and at risk of death due to unequal access to safe drinking water and poor sanitation and hygiene. Diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia, which are preventable with safe water and sanitation, remain leading causes of child mortality.

Hugo brought to UNDP his strong background in communications and digital marketing, technical skills, as well as a drive to contribute to the development of his home country, Guatemala. He has made a significant impact in various projects.
One of these is En Marcha Digital, a strategic initiative that supports entrepreneurs in adapting their business models during the COVID-19 pandemic, equipping them with free digital tools to reach their clients in novel ways.

Undernutrition is an important contributor to poor maternal, newborn and child survival and development in Uganda. Stunting (low height for age) and wasting (low weight for height) are key indicators of childhood malnutrition and are the result of chronic or recurrent undernutrition.
Both conditions are usually associated with poverty, poor maternal health and nutrition and/or inappropriate feeding and care in early life. Both indicators prevent children from reaching their physical and cognitive potential.

Communicating for gender equality
Shukria Syed (UN Women, South Sudan) – contributing to SDGs 3, 4, 5 & 17)
In South Sudan, Shukria Syed is applying her communications skills, as a UN Volunteer, to help tackle the pressing needs for gender equality in the country.
Her assignment with UN Women South Sudan has involved leveraging local means of communication to spread critical information. With her team, she has participated in messaging gender concerns via media platforms such as radio.
