The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme delivers peace and development results through volunteerism. UN Volunteers are at the frontline of implementation and engaging communities at the grassroots level.

UNV engages and partners with stakeholders, including UN Member States, the UN system and volunteer-involving organizations, to achieve globally-agreed goals related to peace and development. UN Volunteers facilitate effective and inclusive engagement with civil society and community groups, transfer skills and experience across countries of the South and enable the grassroots mobilization of yet more volunteers.

The UNV Annual Report: Volunteering for the World We Want depicts the work and achievements of UN Volunteers in addressing the challenges of peace and sustainable human development. This report highlights UNV’s partnerships and results, and attests to the commitment, creativity and talent of our UN Volunteers, UN Youth Volunteers and UN Online Volunteers.

New UNV report presents the Peru Soy Voluntari@ network model for cross-sector collaboration

The UNV report "Volunteer Entities Networks in Peru: Cross-sector collaboration in the Soy Voluntari@ network model" presents the methodology used for developing subnational volunteer networks within Peru, and explains how to replicate the model in other countries and contexts. The Soy Voluntari@ network is an innovative reference for Latin America to create inclusive spaces and coordinate different actors engaged in volunteering.

During the last years, UNV has been supporting innovative approaches to managing volunteer infrastructure in Peru by facilitating the establishment of the Soy Voluntari@ National Network, a pioneer initiative aiming at cross-sectoral action and dialogue. The Soy Voluntari@ network is an innovative reference for Latin America to create inclusive spaces and coordinate different actors engaged in volunteering.

Rapid deployment of UN Volunteers

When large-scale emergencies like the Ebola outbreak, Syrian Refugee Crisis and Philippines cyclone (Haiyan) occur, a coordinated rapid response is critical in ensuring that the UN system can cope with the demands, support the host government and reorient its programmes.

Unified Conditions of Service

UNV released the Unified Conditions of Service on 1 October 2021. These unify and supersede prior versions of the national and international UN Volunteer Conditions of Service. The provisions apply to all individuals recruited as UN Volunteers. In addition, as of 1 January 2024, criteria on age and experience was streamlined - along with duration of assignments.

The UNV Annual Report 2014: Inspiration in Volunteer Action highlights outstanding achievements realized in 2014 through the tireless efforts of UN Volunteers worldwide.

In 2014, UN Volunteers were at the forefront of development efforts and crisis response around the world. In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, UNDP and other UN partners engaged UN Volunteers to support emergency relief efforts and resilience projects in hard-hit communities.

Thanks to UNV’s extensive database of technical expertise, the UN was able to rapidly deploy skilled UN Volunteers in the areas where they were most needed.
