Every meal tells a story: A volunteer's voice from Tajikistan

In Tajikistan’s rugged mountains, a simple idea is transforming lives: feed children so they can learn. Through the World Food Programme’s school feeding initiative—supported by the Russian Federation and the Government of Tajikistan 440,000 children in some 2,000 schools receive nutritious meals every day. These meals turn classrooms into spaces of hope, helping children learn, grow, and build healthy habits that will last for generations. Behind this impact is a network of partnerships and dedicated people, including volunteers who bring these stories to life. One of them is Elizaveta Smeshko, a Russian international UN Volunteer serving as an Associate Communications and Advocacy Officer with WFP.

When Elizaveta arrived in Tajikistan in January 2025, her goal was clear: shine a light on the school feeding programme funded by the Russian Government, which also funds her UN Volunteer assignment. But as her assignment unfolded, her role expanded—covering all WFP programmes in Tajikistan and making her work as dynamic as the country itself.

From drafting social media posts to traveling to remote schools for interviews and photos, Elizaveta’s days are a blend of creativity and purpose. One of her proudest moments? A feature she wrote—and photographed—celebrating school cooks, was published on the United Nations Tajikistan website in August 2025.

“The story: How School Cooks from Farkhor became national champions two years in a row was my biggest achievement so far—it showed the real faces behind the feeding programmes in schools,” says Elizaveta.

The content highlighted two winners of the Best School Cook Awards, launched in 2022. For Elizaveta, these interviews were more than work—they were windows into lives dedicated to children’s well-being.

Elizaveta emphasized the vital connection between nutritious school meals and a child’s education and future. “For me, the idea of the interview was to know more about the school cooks—their experience, what they think about our programme, and why they decided to participate in this competition. I wanted to show the impact of school cooks on better nutrition in schools—and on peace and development as a whole.”

“Every meal served is more than food—it’s a promise of a better future,” shares Elizaveta. The school feeding programme empowers communities through income-generating activities like beekeeping, helping families diversify diets and improve food security—a component funded by the Russian Federation since 2013.

In addition, she also supports communications such as drafting press releases, presentations, translating reports, and assists in organizing events—from food handover ceremonies to exhibitions—where WFP showcases its impact and builds partnerships. “Here in Tajikistan, WFP’s work is mostly development assistance. Everyone working here contributes to sustainable development, food security, and stronger partnerships. Even in communications, we aim to increase visibility and transparency, which strengthens impact and contributes to human development.”

Communications roles often demand flexibility and quick thinking. Adjusting to unclear responsibilities and breaking through language barriers, Elizaveta turned challenges into opportunities for growth—proving that adaptability is as vital as creativity. “Not everyone speaks English or Russian, and that can slow things down. But with support from colleagues, I’ve learned to navigate these hurdles.”

Elizaveta's UN Volunteer assignment carries on in 2026. She is looking forward to sharpening her partnership expertise while continuing to drive communications and advocacy with WFP.

“UNV has given me the opportunity to explore new areas and grow professionally. I’m excited about what comes next.”
