The West Bank field office, located in East Jerusalem, supports over 800,000 refugees of whom 25 per cent live in 19 camps.  Some camps are located next to major towns, while others are in rural areas.

Takuma gained first-hand practical field experience during his assignment, working with project staff across a range of sectors implementing reform initiatives identified in the West Bank Annual Operational Plan and UNWRA Medium Term Strategy.

Since 1950, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has been working to ensure recognition of the rights of five million refugees in the Near East. Among them are over half a million children who continue to receive quality education.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme continues to demonstrate its ability to meet contemporary development and peace challenges.  In 2016, UNV’s response to the refugee and migrant influx showcased this flexibility and rapid action capabilities through the deployment of hundreds of UN Volunteers who support humanitarian and development initiatives benefiting Syrian refugees and their host communities.

Le programme des Volontaires des Nations Unies (VNU) continue à prouver sa capacité à réunir le développement contemporain et les défis liés à la paix. En 2016, la réponse du programme VNU face aux flux migratoires de réfugiés et de migrants a mis en valeur cette souplesse et cette capacité d’action rapide par le déploiement de centaines de Volontaires des Nations Unies soutenant les initiatives humanitaires et de développement, favorisant les réfugiés syriens et leurs communautés d’accueil.

Une réunion internationale de représentants des Nations Unies s'est tenue à Helsinki les 23 et 24 janvier, afin de débattre et trouver un accord sur un projet d’aide global dans le but d’apporter du soutien à une Syrie déchirée par le conflit. Les Volontaires des Nations Unies jouent un rôle essentiel dans la réponse faite à cette crise humanitaire.

An international meeting of United Nations representatives is underway today and tomorrow, January 23-24, in Helsinki to discuss and agree on a comprehensive relief plan to provide aid in strife-torn Syria. UN Volunteers are an essential part of the response to this humanitarian crisis.  Highly qualified and largely from developing countries themselves, they provide relief and ensure the delivery of basic social services to refugees, as well as their host communities, and promote peace-building.
