SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth, SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production

The joint United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme Social Innovation and Volunteerism in Uzbekistan Project is harnessing the social innovation of young people to tackle development challenges.

By providing training, advocacy, and grants to young innovators UNV is helping to unlock the talent and entrepreneurial skills of Uzbek youth, many of whom previously lacked opportunities to contribute to development.

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth

The Strengthening Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) project and National Service Scheme (NSS) comprise one of the world’s largest youth volunteering schemes and together reach out to over 11 million young people in India. National UN Volunteer Anil Kumar Mishra is a UNV-District Youth Coordinator (UNV-DYC) in Sarguja, Chhattisgarh, where his responsibilities include reaching out to out-of-school, marginalized youth in the district.

SDG 4: Quality education
On the occasion of the 5th Summit of Pan-African UN Youth Leaders in Libreville, the Minister of Youth and Sports of Gabon, Blaise Louembe, and the Chief of Partnerships and Communications Division of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, Kazumi Ikeda-Larhed, signed an agreement for the implementation of a project that will support the establishment of a Youth Volunteer Corps in the country. The agreement was signed in the presence of the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba.

SDG 1: No poverty

The UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi recently spent a week visiting China at the invitation of the All-China Youth Federation.  He was joined by a joint UN delegation of senior youth experts from UNESCO, UNV, UNEP, UN Habitat, ILO, and UNFPA to advance collaboration on youth development in China.

United Nations Volunteers (UNV), the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide, has established a programme for young volunteers. Through this programme, UNV mobilizes thousands of young volunteers to support the work of the United Nations around the world.

100 young Korean students attended the first ever United Nations Volunteer (UNV) programme-Korea Joint Forum on Volunteering for Peace and Development at the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 8 October. The Forum heard of the overwhelmingly positive contributions young people can make to international development through volunteering.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals

This week and for the second time in less than a month, the average age in the building UNV Headquarters in Bonn dropped significantly, inversely proportional with the rise in levels of energy and enthusiasm. UNV, as part of a series of UN Youth Volunteer training sessions, is hosting  groups of young people attending their Assignment Preparation Training.

SDG 4: Quality education, SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals

Last night, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme brought the achievements, commitment and energy of five young volunteers into the international spotlight through a unique partnership with MBC Hope, the corporate social responsibility arm of Middle-East broadcasting giant MBC Group. 

The UNV/MBC Al Amal Youth Volunteering Award highlights the capacity of young volunteers in the Arab region to drive positive change in their communities. Moreover, it provides a platform for young people themselves to inspire each other and feel confident about their future.

SDG 5: Gender equality

After the military coup of April 2012, all the socio-economic indicators of Guinea Bissau experienced a setback. Strikes in crucial sectors such as education, health care and transportation paralyzed the country. More than two months of strikes were registered in 2013 in all the schools of Guinea Bissau.
