On 31 August 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 scale struck eastern Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan. Aid teams are working hard to reach survivors, facing blocked roads and broken communication lines. UN teams reached the mountainous Ghazi Abad district on foot and stressed the urgent need for a humanitarian response. On the ground, several UN agencies reported devastation across four eastern provinces of Afghanistan including Nangarhar and Kunar, where staff and humanitarian partners are providing relief efforts. UNV stands ready to support the UN system’s response through fast-track deployment of UN Volunteer and Online Volunteer modalities.
