UNV Web Privacy Policy

I. Overview

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is committed to the privacy of individuals who visit and interact with www.unv.org (hereinafter referred to as “users”) and follows the Privacy Policy set out below. This privacy policy applies to all UNV sites within the unv.org domain name (hereinafter referred to as UNV sites). By visiting UNV sites, the user consents to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

II. What Information does UNV collect?
 

Anonymous Site Usage
In general, you can browse the UNV sites without telling us who you are or revealing any personal information about yourself. We gather general browsing data from standard server logs. These include your IP (Internet Protocol) address, domain name, browser type, operating system and information such as the website that referred you to us, the files you downloaded, the pages you visit and the dates/times of those visits, as well as anonymized demographic data.


Personally identifiable information
If you register for a newsletter, log on to certain UNV sites, request information, provide feedback, register with the UNV Unified Volunteering Platform (“the Platform”), join a discussion group or join an electronic mailing list, you will be asked to provide personal information such as your name, address, e-mail address, contact information and any other information from which your identity is discernible. This information is collected only with your knowledge and permission and is kept in various UNV databases.
If you set up a personal profile through the Platform, you will be asked to provide personal and personally identifiable information.
If the user provides unique identifying information, such as name, address and other information on forms stored on UNV sites, the collection, retention and use of such information will be subject to UNV/UNDP regulations, rules, policies and procedures and to the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Principles available here https://explore.unv.org/tou-pp.
In addition to the personal or personally identifiable information provided by the user to UNV when registering with and using the Platform, UNV may also gather certain information about the user’s behaviour, including what areas the user visits and what services s/he accesses. Moreover, information about the user’s computer hardware and software may be collected by UNV. This information can include, but is not limited to, the IP address, browser type, domain names, access times and referring website addresses.
UNV retains indefinitely all the information it gathers about the user to make her/his use of this Platform more efficient, practical and relevant. The user can correct or update her/his personal information at any time and can withdraw from the Platform at any time, in which case UNV will remove the user’s account profile information, except for an archival copy, which will not be accessible on the Internet.

III. What does UNV do with the information it collects

UNV uses the information it collects on UNV sites, whether personal, demographic, collective or technical, for the purpose of operating and improving the UNV sites, fostering a positive user experience and facilitating the connection of candidates and UN Volunteers to organizations.


Anonymous Web Usage
The information gathered during general browsing of the UNV sites is used to analyze trends and usage of the UNV sites and to improve their usefulness. It is not connected with any personal information. However, if you have registered with UNV in connection with any activity on a UNV site,
the information we collect about your normal web usage will be identifiable to you.
 

Personally identifiable information
Providing information is your choice. When you undertake certain actions on UNV sites, you knowingly provide us with personal information about you, such as your name, email address, postal address and other personal and personally identifiable information.
UNV undertakes to treat personal and personally identifiable data confidentially and with data minimization to the extent possible. UNV may use the personal and personally identifiable information you provide as follows, noting that this is not an exhaustive list:
• To contact you – either in response to a query or suggestion, or to mail newsletters, documents, publications, etc. to you;
• To manage and process applications to the Platform;
• To confirm your registrations on a site or Platform;
• To retain your online profile and preferences for future visits to UNV sites;
• To help you quickly find information that is relevant to you based on your interests, and help us create site contents most relevant to you;
• To undertake statistical analysis of user behaviour.

IV. Disclosure of Information to Others
UNV does not disclose to third parties user’s personal information, combined personal and demographic information or information about her/his use of the Platform (such as areas the user visits or services s/he accesses), except in the limited circumstances below, and when UNV is satisfied that third parties affords appropriate protection for the personal data provided:
(a) In case the user applies for a volunteering opportunity, certain registered users of the Platform involved in volunteer management processes will be able to access part of the user’s personal profile, such as name, email address and personal web pages, as well as any additional personal and demographic information the user may submit with his/her application.
(b) UNV may disclose such information, as necessary, to entities and individuals whom it has contracted to perform functions on its behalf.
 

V. Use of Cookies
A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s hard drive containing information about the user.
Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information while on a site.
By setting a cookie, UNV will remember the user the next time he/she visits a site and will not have to ask questions that the user has already answered.
The user is always free to accept or decline our cookies if his/her browser permits. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but the user can usually modify her/his browser settings to decline all cookies, if s/he prefers. If the user chooses to decline cookies, he/she may not be able to use certain features on UNV sites and may be required to re-enter information more frequently to use certain services on a site.


VI. Correcting and Updating Personal Information
All users can correct, update or change their personal and personally identifiable information by logging into their accounts on the applicable UNV site.
 

VII. Opting out
Users may elect to stop receiving communications from UNV at any time by logging into their account on a UNV site and closing their account.


VIII. Security
UNV employs a range of techniques and security measures based on best practices to protect the information maintained on our system from loss, misuse, unauthorized access or disclosure, alteration or destruction. However, UNV assumes no responsibility for the security of information.
UNV will not share rent, or sell information to any other organization, however we reserve the right to share information with UN entities and other relevant stakeholders, as per Section IV.
 

IX. Links to other sites – Disclaimer
UNV sites may contain hypertext links to other sites external to the UNV domain. UNV assumes no responsibility for these sites, including the privacy practices or the content of such websites.


X. Privileges and Immunities
Nothing in or relating to this privacy policy or this site shall be deemed a waiver of any of the privileges and immunities of UNV or the United Nations under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies.


XI. Notification of Changes
If UNV decides to change its privacy policy, UNV will post those changes to this page so users are always aware of what information we collect and how we use it.
