UNV - Share the Story (Kenya): Welcome to Kibera

In Kibera, Kenya, communities are struggling with several factors that are affecting daily living conditions. The threat of cholera and TB is common as poor sanitation, open sewage, contaminated water and cramped housing allow these diseases to spread quickly. Secondly, transportation accidents are regular occurrences as many people live and walk near train tracks, and trains can derail at any time. Lastly, tightly-spaced homes and the flammable materials used to construct them make it easy for fires to spread quickly. Poor electricity connections and cooking on open fires also contribute to fire hazards.
