UN Volunteers participate in Kazakhstan Expo 2017

Expo-2017 Energy of the Future takes place from 10 June to 10 September in Astana, Kazakhstan, and introduces innovative technologies and solutions to scale up the world’s sustainable energy production, promoting energy security and efficiency, and advocating for renewable energy around the world.

Two million visitors are expected to attend the Expo, which is made possible with the help of some 4,000 volunteers.

We have heard from 2,900 voices of serving UN Volunteers and those who have recently completed their assignments.

Summary of key findings:

Volunteerism adds unique value to disaster risk reduction and resilience within communities

UN Volunteers have been working tirelessly since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami to provide new ways of coping with natural disasters. Their work has led to policy changes, increased awareness, and improved structures of support in the affected countries.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) has been supporting implementation of the United Nations Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience in South and East Asia and the Pacific since 2014.

Partnering to support youth volunteerism in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia

Mr. Toily Kurbanov, Deputy Executive Coordinator, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) will visit Baku, Astana and Moscow from 22 to 26 May. During his mission to the region, Mr. Kurbanov will meet partners within government, volunteer involving organizations and academia, to discuss support to volunteerism in the region.

UN Volunteers help UN agencies rebuild communities after Ecuador earthquake

After the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador in April 2016, affecting the lives of around 720,000 people and with almost 30,000 people having to seek refuge in temporary camps, UNV supported the work of UN agencies with the rapid mobilization of 29 national and three international UN Volunteers who worked on emergency response, most of them in the areas directly affected by the earthquake.
