Protecting Internally Displaced Persons, including women and girls

International Women’s Day gives us the chance to recognize the vital contributions women make every day and mark the challenges we still have to meet to achieve gender equality. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UN Volunteers assigned to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO) and UN agencies are supporting local projects aimed at furthering gender equality. They are involving women in political and economic decision making processes, monitoring human rights violation or preventing and responding to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Based in Goma, a city in the eastern DRC, Italian international UN Volunteer Serena Ricci is assigned to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as an associate protection officer. Her role is to ensure the protection of refugees, forcibly displaced women, girls, men and boys and people with specific needs.

Women as agents of change after a natural disaster

Following the earthquake, the situation of women and girls was of special concern because they are more likely to become victims of violence and discrimination in a humanitarian emergency. Displacement, over-crowed camps, lack of privacy and lighting, limited and unsegregated wash facilities increase the risks.

My assignment with UNESCO has been an eye-opener

As Belgian, I’ve been fortunate to be born in a country where basic public goods such as access to education, health, social protection and my right to freedom of movement are a given and evident reality. For that reason, it is both eye opening and heartbreaking to see that Palestinian boys and girls still facing challenges every day.

Witnessing the current context from a close perspective has brought up many feelings going from fascination, frustration but also inspiration. It inspires me to excel further in my assignment and beyond, in order to give my small contribution towards more sustainable peace and development, because at the end of the day, that is the underlying essence of why we do what we do.

UNV and UNESCO reaffirm partnership through Memorandum of Understanding

“UN Volunteers are highly-specialized professionals who work at grassroots level to empower communities to pursue learning and education to overcome development challenges, including extreme poverty,” says UNV Executive Coordinator Olivier Adam. “Leaving no one behind is at the heart of what makes UN Volunteers special, and we are looking forward to engaging more with UNESCO.”

Joining the ranks of the one billion

The training was meant to inform, prepare, engage and make the volunteers better understand the role of UN Youth Volunteers in the context of the United Nations.

These 30 youth volunteers were part of UNV’s Full Funding programme. They left today for their funding countries, the Czech Republic, France and Switzerland. In just a matter of days, they will start their volunteer assignments in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Their enthusiasm and desire to make a difference to the world resonated throughout the induction training.
