A team of over 22 volunteers in rural Glengoffe, Jamaica, has been working towards empowering this small community of 5,000 people in order to sustain their environment against the impact of climate change. Known for their strong spirit of self-reliance and volunteerism, the people of Glengoffe rely heavily on farming for their livelihood. Heavy rainfall and long periods of drought have exposed the ecosystem of Glengoffe to landslides and have threatened biodiversity.

In Kibera, Kenya, communities are struggling with several factors that are affecting daily living conditions. The threat of cholera and TB is common as poor sanitation, open sewage, contaminated water and cramped housing allow these diseases to spread quickly. Secondly, transportation accidents are regular occurrences as many people live and walk near train tracks, and trains can derail at any time. Lastly, tightly-spaced homes and the flammable materials used to construct them make it easy for fires to spread quickly.

In order to promote a healthier community, UN Volunteers of Liberia with help from partnerships of the armed forces of Liberia, UNICEF and other agencies provided free medical services for students of the school of the blind and for other residents (women and children) in the township of Virginia. Volunteers organized treatment for diseases such as malaria, typhoid, respiratory infections, and skin conditions. About 150 students, from ages five to 18, received care as part of an annual medical outreach clinic.

Port Louis, Mauritius: Originally from Italy, since last February, I have been a "volonter pou Moris", which means "volunteer for Mauritius" in Mauritian Creole, serving in the UNDP Country Office in Port Louis as a UNV Intern in Inclusive Development and Gender.
