Seoul—12 October, 2026: The Republic of Korea and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) are marking 40 years of partnership, celebrating four decades of cooperation that has connected Korean citizens with opportunities to volunteer for peace and development around the world.
During an official two-day visit to the Republic of Korea on 12 and 13 October 2026, UNV Executive Coordinator Toily Kurbanov is meeting government representatives and international organizations. The visit takes place during the International Volunteer Year and will focus on how volunteer action can further strengthen solidarity and cooperation while responding to global peace and development challenges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea held the Sixth ROK–UNV Strategic Dialogue in Seoul on 12 October.
"Through this partnership, we have expanded our contributions to the international community across a wide range of areas, such as peace, human rights, humanitarian assistance, and sustainable development. At the same time, we have supported young Koreans and experienced professionals in gaining first-hand experience in the field with the United Nations and in building the expertise needed for careers in international organizations," said Choi Won-seok, Director-General for International Organizations and Nuclear Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.
The Strategic Dialogue was followed by a UNV Information Session for approximately 300 Korean nationals interested in careers with international organizations. Around 100 participants attended in person and 200 joined online. The session featured a special lecture by UNV Executive Coordinator Toily Kurbanov.
“For 40 years, the Republic of Korea and UNV have worked together to advance volunteerism as a force for peace and development. This milestone celebrates what we have achieved together and looks ahead: we will keep our partnership ambitious and create more opportunities for Koreans to serve the United Nations and help shape a better future,” said Toily Kurbanov, UNV Executive Coordinator.
A commemorative plaque was presented in recognition of the partnership and cooperation between UNV and the Republic of Korea since 1986.
