As part of my volunteer assignment, I travelled to five communities—Otuan, Ayamasa, Ikebiri 1, Ekowe and Ekeremor—to help produce a documentary about UNODC’s work. Some require hours of travel by road, while others are accessible only by water. Ikebiri 1, I was told, lies close to the Atlantic Ocean.

A good harvest still needs a buyer

Behind each shelter stands a series of decisions that most people will never see. Where should it be built? Will it withstand the next storm? Can it provide dignity as well as protection? 

For Francesca, the winding road showed much of what she had learned about service. You do not always know the way. You cannot assume you have all the answers. Sometimes, the only way forward is to listen to the people who know the area.Francesca came to Lesotho from Italy as a UN Volunteer Social Policy Officer with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). She had worked in a country office before, but she wanted to move closer to the work in the field.

For many people, opportunities to volunteer with the United Nations remain little known. Kateřina Rohanová understands that feeling. Before joining the United Nations, she volunteered in different settings, from summer camps to dance studios but never imagined that volunteering also existed within the UN. She certainly didn't expect that one day she would become a UN Volunteer herself.

Through awareness sessions and community outreach, volunteers helped people across Uzbekistan better understand digital risks and protect their rights online. The first article on this topic included the experience of UN Volunteer, Umidjon Khujabekov, and his contribution to promoting safer digital spaces. Now, four more UN Volunteers reflect on the moments that showed them the real impact of their work.

"Ecuador está marcado por una larga historia de exclusión de los pueblos indígenas y un diálogo intercultural frágil, lo que continúa generando tensiones", explica Noémie. "A pesar de que la Constitución reconoce al país como intercultural y plurinacional, aún existe una comprensión limitada de lo que estos conceptos significan realmente, tanto en principio como en la práctica." 

Daria still remembers the moment it all came together. “When I saw the UN Volunteer vacancy in 2022, it felt like everything aligned—the personal connection, the long‑held dream of working with the United Nations.” She applied, got the offer, said her goodbyes—and soon after, was on a flight to Minsk. Originally from the Russian Federation, Daria joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus as a UN Volunteer.
